Last year cooking events and chocolate making seemed to really take off. There’s nothing about these events that means that they couldn’t have been on offer 20 years ago, yet for some reason their time came last year.

What are the new ideas this year? What sort of activities has the time come for?

I am normally a “get in, do my job, and get out” kind of employee. I have recently been selected to lead/create a small/short team building activity surrounding our call closing. Needs to include setting expectations offering further assistance and thanking for business/calling Brand . Any ideas?

I have an activity where each person pulls radom questions out of a basket like “What was your favorite memory when you were in High School”. Is there any creative ideas you can come up with to make this more than just a question and answer session? I want it to be FUN!

I thought that I had a really good relationship with my co workers, but since I got a promotion, that I did not ask for, everyone is talking behind my back (asking one another if I should have gotten the job) and some are not even speaking to me. Should I care? How do I build the team back? I also want to say that I really do deserve this promotion, I have been dedicated, hard working and a team player, since day one. I am not being bragdotious either, I did not even tell people that I had gotten the promotion, my boss did. HELP!

Do you agree that employers should stop these utterly ridiculous role play - or team building - exercises when considering you for a job? Far too many firms now are introducing these role play scenarios as a way of weeding out weaker candidates, and in my view I think this is just stupid and totally unnecesssary. Whoever first introduced these ridiculous team building exercises needs to wake up to the real world!

I even read of one case where a top firm demanded all job applicants dance to a boogie record before interviewing them for a job! I ask you!

Hi all. We were recently short-listed for entry into a multinational corporate’s graduate development program.

They have booked group meetings for all the candidates at a professional training centre downtown. The invitation states that it is intended to test our ‘team-building’ and ‘communications’ skills.

What exactly does ‘team-building’ skills mean? Are they going to ask us to form teams to solve a problem they fix? Role-play? Team sports? Some kind of debate?

There will be reps from the company - what will they be looking for?

What do you think other candidates would be like? Will there be a mad scramble for display ‘leadership’ to the company reps?

Also, we had no prior ‘first interview’ - is this unusual?

I am supervisor of a group of 6 clinicians that are very unique individuals and since entering the picture, I have noticed a disconnect in how they function, not as individuals, but as a team. This is for a company retreat. It has to be in a conference room (unfortunately), last no more than 30 minutes and involve 15-18 manager/executive types (most of them men in their 40s). The goal is to establish camaraderie and function as a cohesive team (to tackle problems in later part of the day). Any ideas? Thanks!
